    • RE: A request from the devs: Do not cater to the elites

If power creeps turn out to be more of an augmentation than a real game-changer, then I think they'll make for an interesting dynamic. It's reassuring to hear that they won't disturb the gameplay balance too much.

But when it comes to the discussion of leveling the playing field for newer players vs. players that have been building an empire (and an advanced code base!), I think achievements might play into the solution. For newer players, achievements could come with rewards, bonuses, or resources that could help them establish themselves. I really don't want to see Screeps turn into some generic MMO, but ideas borrowed from other games might include power-ups like 24 or 48 hours of decreased spawn time or decreased spawn energy requirements, or an achievement that rewards a player with 100k energy- rewards that would be trivial for well established players, but could really support novice players.

Also, is there any collection of information that is established to help support novice players? I know some of us have public code bases (myself included) that have been forked by novice players, but a repository of information might be good as well. Just a thought.

I also wonder whether there is any benefit to any players by re-purposing empty space such as this into novice zones. We are a bunch of sharks and we eat newer players alive so that they don't grow to be a threat on our doorstep... "no neighbors == good neighbors"!

Are new players warned that certain novice zones are in pools of sharks? Maybe they should be warned that certain novice zones are dangerous. Maybe new sectors could be green novice zones, but re-purposed areas could be yellow novice zones? That way they know that it will take work to survive, living among warlords.

Because truthfully, it's breaking my heart having to destroy so many novice rooms!

      Kind regards,
      Your local aspiring empathetic warlord,

Artem, seriously, a great big thank you for maintaining the game. I know you need to push updates and security fixes and patches for balance and sometimes it either breaks our code or breaks our style of gameplay... and it makes some of us unhappy... but I can see that you have the future of the game's security, balance, and development goals at the forefront of your mind. Even if I don't like some of the changes as they roll out now, I look forward to playing this game from now into its future.

And thank you for noticing some peoples' utilization of flags as free memory (kilobytes per flag? wtf?) and making changes so that we don't collectively pay for those individuals' intelligent but generally taxing shortcut around memory utilization.

And thanks to the community for helping to come up with solutions for these issues when you feel like Artem is too heavy-handed on the updates. A shout-out to tedivm for not rage quitting and even putting some good solutions out there (landmarks? I can dig it). I say thank you because I don't have any solutions to the issues of flag usage, since I don't use any flags, therefore I'll kindly bow out of this conversation!
