    • RE: On the topic of open source code bases

      Heya guys,

I've got a few really blunt opinions 😡 on this topic, as they're the reason I've lost interest in the game. 😫 : Their consequence varies from person to person.

      • Running someone elses code as your mainstay on the official servers is complete ass. I don't have a solution for this. Just know that deep down I think you're feeble-garbage if you do.
      • I firmly believe Screeps has an incidence of this at well over 50% (rounded waay down!!!) of the player base on the official server. Tiny tweaks are NOT personalisation. You're a fraud.
      • Any claim that you're "learning" on the official server from using a pre-built bot is a complete and undeniable lie. You're a liar, a fraud, and a bit crap. You own an iPhone and an xBox. I'm going to go full VW Peter Stormare on your tricked-out-ride. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6Dx9MhrqcE
      • This is a personal challenge game. Sure, that's not explicit, nor enforceable, you can join guilds, do as you please etc... but using someone elses code is a flag that indicates you're not qualified MENTALLY or SOCIALLY for the game. Have some pride...The simple fact that you're not to run multiple accounts is a dev-enforcement of this personal-challenge-theme, which I highly approve of.
      • NCP ?? That political correctness gone mad. Yes, I believe there is no place for such a player. No, I don't care if it's for your kids, your wife, your friend, or what-not. Don't care. Not everything has to be, nor is, accessible by everyone in the MENTAL REALM. Get out of my playground, I'm here because I want to get AWAY from those who don't have the capacity to DO THIS.

Well with that vote-downiness being said, I've abandoned the game purely because my observation was that it seemed 90% of the surrounding players at any given location I spawned were using code they didn't build. For me, that's not good enough. They're not challenging opponents, or if they are, it's because of brute-force-GCL or numbers (guild attacks etc ).

My code never matured beyond what I'd consider "intermediate entry level" (holy smoke it's garbage code!!) , but I lost interest at such a low level because what I'd accomplished seemed to be waaaayyy above-average. Understand that average is really low quality bot garbage.

Sharing your hard work is FUN, and you should be proud. There is sharing, and there's spoon-feeding. Here's a great example of SHARING: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=937040772 This guy has shown what he's coded, and explained how it works. It's up to the player to duplicate, modify, or improve on the concept. Simply releasing the code would have sucked..

Post videos of your hard work guys. They're super cool.😎 Code is not. 😞

      G/luck 🙂

    • Steam client won't launch with 3d display mode ON

I have Nvidia 3d shutter glasses with a 120hz monitor for 3d gaming, as well as a vive, and two monitors.

When 3d Display Mode is ON in W10 display settings, the Screeps Steam client will not launch correctly. A black screeps window appears, and remains black. The busy-cursor cycles busy/not-busy on and off indefinitely until the window is closed. Windows control is not lost...the game simply won't display.

If 3d Display mode is turned OFF in Windows display settings, screeps launches correctly.

Note that 3d mode is something you normally leave ON 100% of the time. It is not something you normally toggle ON/OFF after a gaming session.

The web-client in chrome behaves correctly with 3d mode turned ON.

The nvidia control panel is shown here merely to show Stereoscopic drivers have been installed. The control panel menu items are not visible if not installed. Likewise, the W10 display settings 3d option is not available unless some sort of drivers have been installed/activated. (and yes, the nvidia 3d settings checkbox can be unchecked with the W10 3d setting turned ON...the features is in fact ON. )

I believe the issue is unrelated to the vive, as the 3d display settings are not linked per-se'. There are too many permutations of drivers installed/uninstalled /monitors to mess with. I think it's purely a stereoscopic issue with the Steam Screeps client.

The Steam Screeps client can be teased into displaying correctly while it's running (and currently a black window) by turning the 3d setting OFF. Once this is done, the steam client will forever after display correctly regardless of the 3d setting. 😞 If you turn 3d OFF before launching, and on again after it's closed...you will have to turn 3d OFF again before launching, or while it's launched to get it to display correctly.

I'm just dropping this thread here as an information dump. The problem is essentially solved, albeit a little odd.

Kill him harder o4kapuk!!! 🗡 😱 He's still breathing and typing dribble on the forum. 😄

I mean seriously...who wouldn't be honored to be attacked/killed off by a known entity/celebrity of screeps. Learn from the best.

@mashee Mashee, you can create a pull request

Yeah, I know. Even in complete acknowledgement of a programming development style game 🏀 , I would still rather jump off a bridge than log into git... http://steamcommunity.com/app/464350/discussions/0/1471969431582677596/

Don't get me wrong...I'm appreciative of the transparency on all fronts, inc git, but this is a first and foremost a game for the player, not a job. 😉

    • RE: PTR Changelog 2017-09-14: WebGL renderer (WIP)

Text is particularly blurry (room.visual.text) at certain zoom levels that were otherwise readable in the old renderer. Unsure if the new lighting is a factor or not, I don't recall text readability issues previously.

Overall runs great. Would really like a checkbox to turn off lighting effects.

@o4kapuk it might not be a bad idea if the community managers could pull in documentation changes.

      Great idea.

@o4kapuk http://docs.screeps.com/api/#Creep.getActiveBodyparts is missing CLAIM, though the function does not exclude it.

Do you get ERR_GCL_NOT_ENOUGH when trying to creep.claimController?? Or a different error?

To that end, how many results do you get when you iterate through Game.rooms and count game.rooms.controller.my ??

    • Browser history while playing screeps.

Play screeps for any duration. Maybe 5 minutes, maybe 4 hours....

Now check your browser history and try to find that one tab you accidentally closed 40 minutes ago for that thing you were searching for online...

Oh noez! Thousands, and THOUSANDS of screeps histories !! 😞

Anyone got any shortcut methods to dis-allowing domain specific sites from storing histories in Chrome? (Sounds like a NSFW request) Sure I could use incognito mode, and probably will. Just thought I'd ask if any of you web-guys knew just the ticket. 😄

This is an awesome stepping stone for "game-play" 🎮 🕹 style development for screeps beyond the sandbox world. Exciting stuff. 😄

edit: I must say, the screen-shot indicates the possibility of a "snake" style joined creep, sorta in the vision of CyberNinja's post: http://steamcommunity.com/app/464350/discussions/6/152390014794733505/ 😄

Oh, just turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome. Then you can do window capture like normal.

@violet said in Roads not visual?:

As well as Changing the hud sizes?

If you load screeps from within a regular browser window, and hold CTRL-wheelMouseScrollUp/down , you'll change the browser scaling (default for explorer / chrome). This changes your hud size and screeps room window.

You can then zoom the screeps-room-window to an appropriate size.

    • RE: Roads not visual?

@violet Use full screen capture. Hold down ALT, drag the red-window-corner-holds (in obs preview display) over the area you want to capture. Now you're only recording/streaming a sub-component of your desktop.

      @dissi-mark said in Changelog 2017-09-28:

      Con's:

      • Already easy to generate a unique name (spawn.name + "-" + Game.time)

What do you guys think about removing the automatic naming? 🙂

I've had this, and similarly obvious long name strings fail to be unique (seems impossible).

I think the pros, particularly the Lower Entry Level speak for themselves. Not something a beginner needs to deal with.

A great game has a low entry level, and a ceiling that just keeps on going...

@violet said in Roads not visual?:

Is there anyway that it could be made to be game captured on obs? for streaming purposes? As well as Changing the hud sizes?

OBS works fine for Screeps for me. Always did, still does.

@kitkatod I'm also getting strange construction behavior, but only as of the last few hours. Can't remove construction sites with the UI, working with code however.

edit: 3hrs later, remove construction site working with UI.

    • RE: Negative decay time

Same problem with a container in W1N28 on Shard 1.

Room was reserved at the time of going negative.

I unclaimed an adjacent room about the time it went negative. This is probably coincidental but thought I'd mention it in case they become a thing that needs to be debugged later...

    • RE: Changelog 2017-09-19

@daffie I have the same problem with ambiguity in the docs as well.

http://docs.screeps.com/api/#StructureController.upgradeBlocked states the controller cannot be upgraded. But I believe(tm) this means a creep can still apply .upgradeController(). a) for the new effects against ticksToDowngrade, and b) to still increment the controller.progress

The changes mean controller.progress() still increments, but won't LEVEL UP while upgradeBlocked is in place. (eg from RC7 to RC8 )

The ambiguity in functions such as creep.upgradeController() and use of "cannot be upgraded" causes confusion.

Yup, thank you! I derped. Thought I was reading loosely worded proposed changes, not the verbatim wording changes to the API docs. I'll keep an eye out on the commit stuff. 🙂 (omg that Taiwaneese girls footer link thing... LOL ... oh git... )
