Is there a preferred way to stop the server or just kill the process?

So I just got a private server setup today and i'm wondering what the best practice is for backing up the server. Correct me if i'm wrong but I think the only file I need to backup is the 'db.jason' file. Is that correct?

Also am I able to take backups of the file while the screeps server processes are running or do I need to stop all the processes before backing up the file to prevent corruption?
