How/Why does screep without any CARRY transfer energy.

I observe other that mine with a WORK/MOVE screep and then a CARRY/MOVE screep hauls it away.
What I don't understand is how there is anything to transfer if the WORK/MOVE screep has not energy to transfer because it can't carry it.
The WORK/MOVE screep shows no energy when mining, but yet the CARRY/MOVE screep gets some transferred to it anyways. Can someone explain?

The WORK/MOVE only miner will drop all energy in the ground, and then you can pickup the energy from the ground with the CARRY/MOVE creeps
