    • Weird CPU reporting and how to delete memory on other shard

I've recently restarted playing the game. Started on shard1, ended up respawning on shard2.

The upper right place on the screen where it shows CPU usage is showing something like 35 CPU used per tick. But, if I call Game.cpu.getUsed() then it is reporting a reasonable amount of CPU used for the whole tick, which averages around 3ish which is reasonable.

It is like CPU is being used somewhere else and not getting reported. I did realize that I left memory on shard1. I cannot delete it. I even allocated 10 CPU to the shard, but apparently you can't do anything without objects in the shard.

Any idea why there is 30+ extra CPU usage showing up every tick, and how can I get rid of the memory on shard1?

    • RE: Respawn areas appearing suddenly

I'll throw my thoughts in on this too. They are too aggressive. I spent an entire weekend and some of Monday clearing out a sector and playing safe mode games with one of the combatants. Just a few hours after him and his buddy despawned, leaving the sector open for me to settle (I had 6 open GCL at the time) a respawn zone warning appears.

I get it. The devs don't want rooms empty, but right now the way it is being handled is very frustrating.

    • RE: A different shard

I very much like the idea of areas that are more desirable than others. The shards are homogeneous and the only real differences in any particular sector is who is there. Maybe there is some bragging rights to holding the center area, but there is no incentive for conflict, or for me to go anywhere.

It would be extremely interesting to have areas that AIs, especially groups of AIs would have to work together to hold, and there be some reason for them to do that.

I get the point about not wanting to open a new shard. Instead, how about something like there could be something in the middle room of a sector, a puzzle, a NPC boss, something. This could be an interesting programming problem to solve. It could be made even more interesting by only being solvable by more than one player forcing AIs to coordinate.

Once solved, this would unlock something interesting. Extra resources, a special building that does something neat, and beneficial to the group of people involved, and it's nature could be unique to that room. Some of the rooms could be higher level, with better rewards and harder puzzles / bosses, more people needed. Whatever.

This would be able to be included in the current infrastructure. The good, center rooms could be rare, and valuable, and therefore sought after by other groups of people, creating conflict over specific sectors.

Having the special rooms being in the center with the portals adds some extra excitement, as you never know when your enemies will have access to your specials.

    • RE: Optimizations roadmap

I'm no game designer, so these ideas may be terrible, or interesting.

One thing I think Screeps is missing is some variety on the map. There is little in the way of strategic areas. As long as you have space, you are happy. There isn't much of, oh hey look so and so's space is better than mine, I should take that. Or, I need that space for some strategic reason.

Someone had mentioned a while back about Z index on the shards. What if the shards were vertical from each other, and the portals between them went vertically? Meaning my room at W1N1 would in some way be able to portal to shard above and below me at the same room. This would add some strategic reasoning to position between shards, and connect them in a physical meaningful way.

Additionally I'd love to see special areas of some kind appear on the map such that we could fight over them.

    • RE: Optimizations roadmap

      Aterm,

Have you guys considered talking to CCP? They have a large single sharded game, and while they are using a different database platform they may have some helpful advice on how to scale a large single instance database.

    • RE: Optimizations roadmap

One of the aspects that makes Screeps such an interesting game in the single world. Much like Eve online it creates a political environment that is exciting. I'm concerned sharding the game will fracture this, and lessen the overall political scene in the game.

I'm interested to see how this idea develops, but really I hope you figure out a way to shard the game without separate worlds.
